Ainmean-àite Astràilianach deasaich

Hi, I noticed that someone has added some Scots Gaelic names for Australian cities (e.g Sydney = Sidni, Melbourne = Meall Bùirne, Brisbane = Brisban, etc) however only two of these pages use these names (which are Newcastle = An Caisteal Nuadh and Perth = Peairt). So which names should we use? Unlike Welsh (which has Yr Atlas Cymraeg Newydd), there is no official world atlas in Scots Gaelic or Irish. I've Googled the Scots Gaelicised names and relevant results do appear (mostly in Twitter feeds and here on Wikipedia). I think we need to decide and if the Scots Gaelicised names are chosen, then the articles about the cities should be moved to those names. Thanks. 58.179.95.13 00:50, 7 dhen Fhaoilleach 2022 (UTC)Reply

Halò agus fàilte. Meall Bùirne for Melbourne looks whimsical to me, given the Melbourne it's named after is in Derbyshire and the name comes from "mill burn". It's probably best to try to determine what established usage is in a less ephemeral source than Twitter or a Wikipedia. Also I should check Perth and Newcastle to see whether they've merely been Google translated, which doesn't help anyone. Am Faclair Beag (select the "Le ainmean-àite" radio button) lists Sidni for the one in Australia, probably inspired by the one in Nova Scotia, but I can't see any others on a quick glance. DASG has a huge selection of texts but is only really searchable as a concordance so you'll be able to get local context there. Mainly the reason for writing the names in Gaelic spelling would be to make lenition look a bit less weird because there's not a huge Gaelic-speaking community in Australia and the names are either mangled forms of the old Australian names like Wollongong, transplanted British placenames, or in honour of some genocidal governor. Does that help? --CreagNamBathais (an deasbaireachd) 09:06, 7 dhen Fhaoilleach 2022 (UTC)Reply
@CreagNamBathais Newcastle is named after Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Perth is named after Perth, Scotland, so these names would have exonyms. MinecraftGod123 (an deasbaireachd) 03:31, 2 dhen Mhàrt 2022 (UTC)Reply
